Closet Organization

Now that my daughter is in first grade, she is gone all day. Even though I miss her, there are some benefits, like, I can clean her room and throw away what I want and she's non the wiser! She's quite the little collector but after time her collections take over. So mom to the editing rescue! :)

Today I spent time sorting and organizing all of her collections. We have a dedicated box for each "set" that she has but of course after time they all merge and need help. When we buy things for birthdays or Christmas we try to be mindful of sets she already has and try to add to those. I never buy for the kids if I don't know where we are going to put the new toys! Sometimes this means also buying a new tote if a new collection is going to be started.

Once her collections were all back in place I realized that she has a lot of room in her closet, so with paint chalk in hand I taped off a rectangle and went to town!

McKinley's totes weren't labeled and I didn't have any labels on hand. I decided to just print out tote titles on paper and try out the spray adhesive on the back.

I can't guarantee that this method will stand the test of time, but it worked for me today!

By labeling totes and keeping them up high we minimize being overwhelmed by lots of toys. She chooses what she wants to play with {she can have two totes out at once} and she can turn one in at any time for another one.

We do have one larger tote for loose toys and dolls that is out all the time, along with her kitchen set, so she's not deprived! ;)

For chalk organization I added a plate rack I found at Goodwill. After a few coats of spray paint it was ready to hang and is the perfect spot for her chalk!

There was plenty of room to hang her full length mirror in there as well since we didn't have a lot of wall space to work with. If you missed her room reveal last spring here are a few more pics of her room.

How do you organize toys at your house?

  2. Love the idea of organizing toy collections... my daughter has the same problem and her closet is a mess!

Also love how you corraled the stuffed animals - seems our girls have something in common!
